Inmate Arrested for Starting a Fire in Sabine Parish Jail
Louisiana State Fire Marshal’s Office (SFM), in collaboration with the Sabine Parish Sheriff’s Office, has arrested Michael Perry, 35, on charges of Aggravated Arson regarding a fire in the Sabine Parish Jail.
In the evening hours of June 16, the SFM was requested by the Sabine Parish Detention Center to assist with the investigation of a dorm fire. Deputies learned from witness statements that Perry was seen setting a mattress on fire in his room, where he was alone.
Corrections officers were able to put the fire out with a fire extinguisher and all inmates were evacuated without injury.
At the time of the fire, the cell block contained 19 inmates, while the entire facility contained 96 occupants.
After an assessment of the scene, damage to the mattress was confirmed and the fire was deemed intentionally set. Perry was re-booked into the facility on the new charges.
