Louisiana COVID-19 update for Wednesday, April 8 | Around The Town

According to the latest update from the Louisiana Department of Health, there are now 17,030 coronavirus cases in the state, which is 746 more than yesterday.
Of that number, state health officials report 652 Louisianians have died as a result of the virus and the highest number of deaths have been of persons age 70 or older. Also of the deaths, 70.48 % were black, 28.61% were white and .90 % were Asian.
Also, of the coronavirus cases in in the state, 40% are male and 55% female. Health officials report the gender of 5% of cases is unknown. Additionally, 1,983 COVID-19 patients remain in hospitals, with 490 of them on ventilators.
Orleans, Jefferson, East Baton Rouge, Caddo, and St Tammany parishes continue to lead the state in the number of cases. Tensas remains the only parish with no confirmed cases.
The nationwide total is over 400,000 with nearly 13,000 deaths. Globally, the total is 1.4 million with almost 84,000 deaths.
