Schools in Natchitoches Parish are discontinuing its grab-and-go- meals program.
The last day students can pick up to-go meals is Friday, March 20, from 9 to 11 a.m.
Staff are on hand to pass out these to-go meals in the front of the following schools: East Natchitoches Elementary, Fairview Alpha, Goldonna Elementary Jr/ High, Lakeview Jr/ High, Marthaville Elementary/Jr. High, Natchitoches Magnet, Natchitoches Central High, Provencal Elementary/ Junior High, and L.P. Vaughn and in Cloutierville.
Parents can drive through for pick-up or children can walk to one the respective schools, however, children must be present to receive the meals.
Students do not have to go to the school they are enrolled in to receive the meal.
The decision to eliminate the free meal pick up during closures due to the COVID-19 pandemic was made during a special called NPSB meeting on March 18.
At that time, board members received a report stating only 1400 meals had been distributed over the three-day period – March 16 to 18– when the program got underway. Additionally, there were concerns regarding the safety of staff distributing the meals.
Reba Phelps was the lone board member voting against discontinuing the meals. Board members voting yes on the matter were Russell Danzy, Beverly Broadway, Steve Harris, Eugene Garner, Billy Benefield, Dorothy McCaskey, Tan’keia Palmer and Rhonda Guidroz. Board members Emile Metoyer and Katrina Willis were absent.
The board agreed to revisit the matter on March 30. Currently, schools are mandated to remain closed through April 12, with the target return date of April 13.
