by staff reporter Nora Drenner

Mark your calendar now as The Natchitoches Area Chamber of Commerce and NSU Student Government Association are facilitating a moderated candidate forum for the upcoming City of Natchitoches mayoral and city council election.
The forum will take place Thursday, March 19, from 5:30 -7:30 p.m. at Northwestern State University’s news studio located in room 142 at Kyser Hall.
Each candidate will be given three minutes for opening remarks. The audience, both live and online, can submit written questions to the candidates at the beginning of the event.
Questions will be presented by the moderator, with each candidate given an allotted amount of time to respond to the questions posed. There will be a timer with a signal card to keep each candidate on track.
For city council, questions are required to be addressed to the district, and not an individual candidate.
In the mayoral race, Democrat Ronnie James Williams Jr and Libertarian David “DJ” Kees hope to unseat Independent incumbent Lee Posey, who is seeking his third term in office.
Squaring off with incumbent Don Mims for the Councilman at Large seat is Democrat Betty Sawyer Smith.
Democrat Incumbent Sylvia Morrow faces Democrat Christopher Petit, Independent Carl “Doug” Sias and No Party candidate Demetrius Fruga for the district three seat.
Democrat incumbent Lawrence Batiste hopes to retain his district four seat against Democrats James Below, Jr. and Walter E Johnson, Jr. and No Party candidate Rosemary Washington.
Running unopposed are current District one councilman Eddie Harrington and District two councilman Dale Nielsen.
Election Day is Saturday, April 4, with polls open 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Early voting begins Saturday, March 21, and continues through Saturday, March 28, from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m., except for Sunday, March 22.
